More tears came to my eyes while I was browsing Craigslist for Victrolas. Here is a shabby chic VV 405 for only $150.00 for sale in Michigan

Dont cry. It's nothing a can of paint stripper and some shellac couldn't fix.

That is a complete ruin. Even if you stripped the paint it would be nearly impossible to reproduce the multicolored stain and varnish effects Victor used on this case.

Even if it was complete it would just be a parts machine.

I have an S-405 and a regular 405 in my new storage building , which I find nearly impossible to be rid of.
Both are pretty nice condition, with good finishes, though currently missing spring barrels, but I have those in abundance. It is not as if
I'm evan asking any real money for the machines. Both were purchased as they stand for sixty dollars each, sans reproducers. I'd take fifty.
The only market for these consoles appears to be those "Shabby" vandals, and I'm not yet willing to let one of those folks get their hands on them.

Nothings impossible where finishes are concerned. Radio guys do it all the time using toner lacquers.estott wrote:That is a complete ruin. Even if you stripped the paint it would be nearly impossible to reproduce the multicolored stain and varnish effects Victor used on this case.

Not technically impossible, I grant you- but for the cost of reproducing the special finish I suspect you could buy several unmolested originals. I've seen flawless examples fail to sell at a very reasonable $200.00gramophoneshane wrote:Nothings impossible where finishes are concerned. Not exactly what I'd call a special finish, but the toner is only around US$16 a can. Radio restorers do an excellent job at reproducing an original shaded finish using it. No doubt it takes a little bit of practice, but it doesn't look hard to use or do.

Hi All,
I purchased one of these machines in nearly mint condition and after having Mica Monster rebuild the #2 reproducer it will blow your socks off. The gold plating was perfect and it came with all the original albums and they were full of Uncle Josh and Billy Murry records. The drawer is perfect to store all the other reproducers of my other machines. It was $200 on Craigslist and it was in such nice condition that I could not bring myself to offer a lower price. Lowboys seem to have gotten a bad rap and while they take more space I do not think that they are bad machines.
