Nipppers.....

Post by Lenoirstreetguy »

Without being a Nipper collector in any way, I seem to have fallen heir to several sets of the salt and pepper shakers that RCA Victor gave away at various times. Just for silliness I took their pic today. Plus one plaster of Paris nipper statue ( non salt and pepper) that says John Wanamaker on the front. He's had a rough life. How it got from Philadelphia to Toronto would be interesting to know. It is the oldest I think: it's pre RCA. The set that seems to be mismatched size-wise next to him is the set that my parents got with their first RCA Victor television circa 1954. The small one is one of a set that I think was offered about 1933. Does anyone know for sure about that?

Looks like a picture of dad and the kids.

The Wanamaker one is the most interesting and I am thinking it might have some significant value. The salt and pepper shakers show up on eBay with some regularity.

Well, as to how it (he?) got to Toronto from Philadelphia, it just trotted onto the Reading to Allentown, and thence to the Lehigh Valley's northbound "Maple Leaf". Or the Pennsy to NYC Penn Station and board the "Leaf" there. Nothing to it!

There was also a major Wanamaker store in NY City in that era.

Yes, and I believe that store occupied one of the most impressive cast-iron-façade buildings of its type. The original store was on Market St. in Philadelphia; its huge successor, home of the famous organ, is now a Macy's, IIRC, on Center Square.

BTW, a number of other enterprises long associated with New York actually originated in Philadelphia, or preceded it there: Gimbel's, for example, and Horn & Hardart (the Automat). And, of course, Penn Station.
