What are the functions of those species of clamps next the turntable?

Clamps? There is a brake and a speed controller... There are also 2 needle dispensers and another small tin for used needles.

Oh, this is the HMV one.
I have no idea... I've seen this in other gramophones and I'm also curious.

Regarding my Selecta, I've just found out that my Thorens soundbox is prepared to take bamboo needles without the need of an adapter. It has a circle and triangle at the same time in the hole where the needle is to be secured.

I'm now seeking for some courage to replace the gaskets... The kit arrived today.

You are correct António.
They're designed to hold HMV Tungstyle needle tins, which are basically the same as Victors Tungs-tone needles.
They have a fine tungsten wire tip that plays 50-100 records before having to change the needle. They're best used in early record changers, but aren't the kindest needles on records.
