Equipment for Youtube?

Post by 52089 »

I'm trying to make some phonograph videos for Youtube and I find that my Flip Mino video camera doesn't cut it. It has severe limitations on audio reproduction that make videos unacceptable. For example, it automatically levels sound volume, so I can't demonstrate the effect of a mute ball on a Diamond Disc machine. Also, unless I put the camera right outside the horn, the audio level tends to be very low.

I realize I can't fully capture the experience of an acoustic phonograph on a modern video camera, but I'd like to do better. What do you folks use for your Youtube videos? Camera and software recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks!

Even if a HD video camera has manual audio record level capability, you're still stuck with the mic in the camera, and it will change as you move a camera around while shooting.
I record an entire video in one master take, and then add pictures and other action clips afterwards. I record the audio separately on the same master take with stereo mics placed wherever the phono will sound best, and replace the audio track of the master video.
This all requires a video editing program, and I'm using Pinnacle's Studio 14 setup.
The HD camera I use is a Sony HDR-CX150
The audio recorder is a Tascam DR-100
The microphones are Neuman TLM 130's (overkill, probably!)
Here's a recent example, posted earlier on the forum. This took a couple days to shoot and edit!

i use a flip video HD camera, mine works very well but the only downside is it takes up to a hour to upload a video!
