Victor Custom Finishes.

Post by Lenoirstreetguy »

Since we from time discuss custom finishes, here's one from the December 1916 Victor Record Supplement. Here's Marcel Journet in South America standing beside what seems to be a Victrola XVI with an individual finish, and unusual doors over the record storage area and obviously in a dealer's show room.

Appears to be a Vernis Martin XVI. These machines commonly had the added Louis XV style mouding on the doors and on the sides. I wish that the photo was in color!

Here's a photo of a Victrola that I bought at Union last year. It's a bit rough but I think it's a worthy project. Jerry

There might be, its possible that the gold and varnish reflect the flash. The upper doors are angled so they're clear.

Jerry, that is awesome. How do you plan to restore?

If you're looking for the rest of the gold leaf, I think everyone who walked by and brushed a sleeve against it took some home with them, including myself...

Brandon, You're right! People would walk by, stop, and pick up flecks of gold that had fallen on the cement. They were actually picking up bits of the lacquer that were flaking off. It was fun to watch. Jerry
