I want to remove the felft from a turntable without damaging the felt. I want to clean the rust and grime from the turntable itself, but want to reuse the felt. Is there a substance to loosen the glue that was used on the felt?
The turntable is a G&T machine about 1904.

Depending on what type of glue was used. I would use a hairdryer and heat small sections at a time and pry up gently.

I believe most companies used 'burnt shellac' as an adhesive. You might try alcohol (if it doesn't damage the felt); otherwise, you should use gentle heat to soften it, from a hairdryer or an iron, and carefully work under the felt with a razor blade...

You might first just try GENTLY pulling it up. Sometime they come right off with little effort and no damage.
