How refinish cast iron support and how clean my Nipper

Post by a12548 »

The cast iron support is a shiny black but paint is flaked, has anyone successfully repainted it and what was used to smooth the surface and what type paint for glossy black?
Also I read somewhere ( and cant remember where ) on how to restore a Victrola Nipper dataplate. I think the process was spray it all black then Im not sure how to get the raised color back in. Id hate to just slap an incorrect plate from Ebay on my VV VI.

for the cast iron support (correct me if im wrong) but it should be the same method as painting a horn, strip off all the paint until down to bare metal, use some wire wool to roughen up the surface a bit, apply MATT black metal paint then use a laquer over that, that creates a nice original finish however do not try this untill some one else has backed me up on it, i have been stung in the backside before for offering advice i had not personally tried myself
as to the plate (again never personally tried so would need backed up) i imagine you would just spray the entire plate with black metal paint then use wire wool or something else, possibly just scrape it off, to remove the paint off the raised lettering, just a guess, i am sure someone else can either confirm this and/or offer more help

Thanks Alex for your suggestions, i was wondering if instead of the 2 step matte black/lacqeur, would a hi gloss black enamel like Krylon do it? I What would i use to strip cast iron?

Alex is correct with his suggestions. I have used Krylon gloss black fusion paint to paint Victor back brackets and anything else need to be painted black. Get the fusion paint because it doesn't require primer, and dries very hard. Get Eric Reiss's book, The Complete Talking Machine and it shows how to do a data plate, even though Alex is correct.

I just finished cleaning/restoring my data plate. I used WD40 and a non abrasive pad, followed by polishing with MAAS metal polish. I practiced on a spare before I did. They both came out nice. Jim
