Is this a real gramophone?

Post by uranium2011 »

I am new to gramophones and vintage music players in general. I don't know if the gramophone I have interest in is a frankenphone or worse, a crap-o-phone. It is a Victor VI made in 1920 (supposedly), and costs $295. It is large, and made of Tiger Oak. It comes with a one year warranty, spare needles, and comes with records. It is also in a store, not eBay. Supposedly it is in "mint" condition, however, I don't know the validity of that statement. I want to make sure it is real before I put down some money on it.

P.S. It is on the left.

It's real. If it cranks and turns, you've got a good one, and not too bad a price, IMHO. Make sure the sound box can go up and down (I'm sure it will), and that the taper arm moves without issues. Once you get it home, have a look under the top and see what the motor looks like - post a picture. I could be in need of cleaning & greasing.

A VV-IV was my first real re-build, and I've always wanted a VI - congratulations!

If it needs any work, they're a great machine to start on, too!

Good find!

Here's some basic information about the Victor VV-VI -- http://www.victor-victrola.com/VI.htm -- which is not to be confused with the Victor VI (Vic VI), the gold plated outside horn model.

I'd say that's a pretty good price, especially if it's in overhauled/ready to use condition, with a warranty. (Ask the seller if the sound box, or reproducer, was also restored with fresh gaskets, etc.)
