I have been looking to buy a Edison C 19 for a while now. Found one and the guy wants 300 for it? Seems a bit high but i mostly collect Victor machines. The case is great, no missing or chipped veneer, finish is dull but thats all, inside is clean the brass on the reproducer is very good and shiny. Comes with 5 diamond disks.
I know there are some of you who collect Edison stuff or may have this machine. Any idea on the current value? Also the grill cloth is dirty and tore, but those are minor things to me. I apreciate anyones opinions and thoughts.
Whats the average value of a Edison C 19?

I suppose where you're located might have some bearing. But, here on the East Coast, a C19 is a fairly common machine to find. So, rarity would not influence the value. Generally, I would agree that $300 is a bit high. But, if it is in great shape, and has an oak finish rather than mahogany, then that might cause a little more interest.
Typically, though, by the time you rebuild the reproducer and clean it up well, you'd have more in it than you could recover starting at $300.
Just my opinion.

The C19 is pretty common, but it's also a popular choice for a player you'll use a lot (as opposed to just being on display). I haven't seen any go for more than $300 around here, but I have seen several sell in the $250 range, so $300 isn't out of the question is the machine is in very good condition.
You'll find that any well-restored DD machine can be pretty loud, so you may not find it necessary to buy a large machine. My C150 has a smaller horn than a C19/C250, but it's more than enough for my 15x15 living room.

Thanks guys, yes im on the East coast as well. You know how people are. They dont care about the fact it needs to be restored, Reproducer Motor ect.. they think it works its fine. Its not a Oak one it is a Mahogany model.
I apreciate your input

If the machine is clean...$300 is a good deal IMHO..
The OAK is a little harder to find...and usually doubles the price if all the veneer is not damaged.
I have a 1926 C19 with the 10" 12" buttons in excellent condition, and I think the C250 is nicer with the two drawers vs. the record slats/slots on the C19. The drawers are definately more usable than the dopey slats. Edison cheapened out on the C-19 in 1918 by getting rid of the drawers that the C-250 had.. Other than that, Both machines are identical with some machines having a Duncan stop installed. Both machines are well made.

I think the cart must be pulling the horse here, since the C-19 appeared in 1919...! The first C-19s had drawers as well.NEFaurora wrote: Edison cheapened out on the C-19 in 1918 by getting rid of the drawers that the C-250 had..

Well, the folks on American Restoration just "restored" a C-19. For this work they charged $4,500.00. I guess that these machines must now be worth at least that much.

Yes, George,
You are right, The very first C-19's were just C-250 carryovers. I have actually seen a few of these "trasitional" machines." . Have seen some really late C-250's with the late Edison Brass plates like the C-19's carried as well. Some really interesting stuff out there.. I used 1918 as a date because that was really the transitional year, though the C-19 as well as the S-19 and so on did not appear until 1919. You are correct. The "-19" giving a heavy clue as to the year the new models appeared.

Re: Whats the average value of a Edison C 19?
When I look at Edison Diamond Disc phonographs for sale on Ebay or Craigslist, about 90% of the time it's a Chippendale 19 or 250, a Baby Console, or a C-150. Of these three, the Chippendale is the best looking, but very common. I have a C-250 in mahogany, but I've always wanted one in oak. The 250 model has the Duncan stop with no mechanical stop lever under the turntable. So if the Duncan stop is not working, you have to manually shut it off. So if it's in oak, you will pay more.
