Hello,
I have a Columbia Dictaphone shaver that I recently aquired and spent the last two days cleaning it up. The last patent date is 1910. I plan on using it to shave mouldy cylinders. One of the leather belts broke and I was about to toss it in the trash when I noticed some printing on it. The leather is stamped Thos.A.Edison.Ing.63188 I have never seen this befor and thought that it was Interesting especially on a Columbia machine

Re: Interesting Edison leather belt
despite the machine being columbia, edison had alot to do with it, i cannot remember what exactly they had in common but it was either edison allowed columbia to use some of his patents or columbia used some edison parts in the construction of their dictaphone shavers, possibly both, you may notice that where is says "THE DICTAPHONE" the H in "the" will be tilted in on itself, making it look like "TAE" (thomas alva edison!) just so he can make his mark on it,

Flash - I think I have a similar belt . I've never seen one on a machine before but have seen a few loose belts for sale.

Hi Scott,
The belt in your picture is just like mine. Even the same color of brown!

The National Phonograph Company was incorporated on January 27, 1896, then reorganized and newly incorporated as Thomas A. Edison, Inc., on February 28, 1911. Over time it consolidated most of Edison's companies, including the Edison Phonograph Works on August 28, 1924, Edison Storage Battery Company on June 30, 1932, and Emark Battery Corporation on December 30, 1933. The company merged with McGraw Electric Company on January 2, 1957, and became known as McGraw-Edison Company. In 1985 McGraw-Edison was absorbed by Cooper Industries.
