Edison Triumph on eBay

Post by Garret »

The decal and condition of the paint leads me to believe this Edison Triumph has been refinished. Sure, maybe it was stored under blankets for a few years, but something just doesn't seem right. Thoughts?

Triumph case has been refinished, cygnet bracket and crane are reproduction, the lower elbow of horn is refinished. Looks like the horn bell might be original finish that was cleaned with some sort of a thinner preserving the Music Master and Edison decals. Crank and upper housing of Model O reproducer looks reproduction too. It also has a new brass mandrel bushing and belt.

Lid locks look really clean so they might be reproductions.

The decal is a dead giveaway of a refinished cabinet. A lot of restorers seem inclined to place the decal with a distinct upward slant. The original had only a slight rise; the tail of the "E" was nearly level. Compare the pictures below. The Triumph decal isn't even quite centered -- it's a bit to the left.

Note also that the horn shows clear evidence of the hanger being moved from the original position, with the old holes plugged.

This has certainly not been kept wrapped in a blanket for a century.

Yup, once I saw the tilted decal and the missing dot on the i, it just seemed to be refinished. Magnificent original? Not so much!
