It was just something new and exotic to most people back then. And yes, it's terrible!

It was just one of the musical fads back then. Lots of labels recorded it. I have a Pathé or two with it as well as several DDs. It was one of the things Pathé used on its demonstration record.

It was indeed a time when Hawaii would have been a bit exotic. Not some place you just jumped on a plane and went to visit for a day or two. And it may still have been in the public eye, inasmuch as Hawaii was annexed in the late 1890s.

And it still comes around from time to time. Remember Don Ho in the 60s?

At least I am not alone. There is one interesting one on Diamond Disc, in native tongue. Historical, but not enjoyable to me.
