I have posted a 1888 cylinder recording of Robert Browning reciting (sort of) his poem, and I got a copyright claim from IODA - now you can say that really takes the cake!

Most of these claims are simply false, but YouTube won't do a thing to solve the situation.

IODA are the ones with the copyrights claim I got for the Foster songs.
I can kind of understand it with the Jolson recordings, since they are from 1950.
But a cylinder from 1888? That really takes the cake, indeed!

As a side note, I looked into the claims and most were for the recordings, but one company is trying to get a claim for the song, not the recording, of "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair"...

I put a video on my (short lived) You Tube channel of a 1940's Mexican 78 that I had forgotten to title when I uploaded it. On upload it just initially had a non-descript 3 letter title that was what I used to identify it in my media folder. But within an HOUR it already been flagged for copyright by an entity called WMG (World Music Group.)

I took my channel down not long after that, because I saw it as too much hassle for no real payoff.

I used to get copyright flags from both IODA and The Orchard..which made me chuckle as they are in fact both the same company and both trying the same thing!

Five claims on a German 1904 recording of Silent Night, an Austrian composition, and all by American companies. I like especially the claim by "One or more music publishing rights collecting societies" where they even don't bother to tell me who the claimant is.

Five times Anspruch zurückgezogen (= claim withdrawn). Looks pretty much like an attempted online highway robbery:

Well I thought everyone knew that the rights to the 1904 Edison German recording of the 1850's composition, Silent Night, was owned by the Japanese Sony Corp!

Re, "One or more music publishing rights collecting societies" owning the rights, this is the most frustrating. You don't even know who to be angry at!

Got a notification from youTube that The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. have reviewed my copyright dispute for the video of "Edison Blue Amberol no. 4046 Semper Fidelis - March - United States Marine Band" and have reinstated thier assertion that they own the copyright. Four other claims by other entities were withdrawn after my dispute.

It appears in that in addition to copyright owner, Harry Fox agency is judge and jury in the matter as there's nothing more I can do on youTube. No explanation given re. why they think they own the copyright... :x

These so-called legal departments have their heads stuck so deep in their a**es, that they can only look from their t*ts. The copyright on sheet music can be extended to around 100 years. The copyright on performances still is 50 years, moving to 70 years, but not backwards compatible. So anything recorded before 1960 is essentially free of mechanic rights, though the music may still be copyright controlled. The Sony's and Warner's of this world are trying to control the total musical world, regardless whether they make something available or not. I've posted a number of unique piano recordings on the Tube, including some very rare George Gershwin records, that are not available anywhere else. These discs have been banned in the U.S. I don't make a single penny from them, au contraire, it has cost me a lot of money to transfer, restore and make them available to the general public. So, who's the winner? Nobody. Who's the loser? Everybody.

I had the same problem on the videos of my two other Caruso cylinders until I argued with a text naming the certain law clause why they were wrong.

So, before letting them earn anything from my legally uploaded videos I decided to delete them. Maybe I'll take the videos another time and upload them again, just to tease them.
