Maybe some kind of illustrated song device with pictures moving on a roll of paper as the record played. I think it was built with more mechanism than was needed so all the gears and levers would entertain people. I also think it is not nearly as ancient as it appears, maybe 40's-50's.

The House of David religious cult built these "old timey" illustrated song machines in their shops, and operated them in the Arcade in their Eden Springs Park in Benton Harbor. A lot of House of Davis stuff has been scattered all over the lower peninsula since the closure of Eden Springs in the late 1960's.
