Unusual phono

Here is a strange one, a Meteor phonograph, Made by the Meteor Automobile co. of Ohio.

This is really pretty.....I think the off brands are pretty ciol. If parts werent such a bear to find I'd try to have one from many of the the small companies.

Thanks for the kind comment. This and other "off brand machines " are sometimes cooler than the regular big 4 companies. When I buy these I try to buy only the ones that are intact. I got a list several years ago of the number and names of phono makers in the late 1920's. There are over 200 of them. Other collector friends scoff at these, but I don't care. I buy what I like. When I die my children will have a huge auction and get rid of all of them anyway! Keep collecting! Each one you get, you save. Ed

I have one of thease and the center of the grill cloth is missing. The grillcloth in the picture looks nice; I haven't seen one that is folded in that manner; looks nice!

I always prefer the off-brands, especially the table models - they made a lot less but usually sell alot cheaper than the big four too. My favorite is my Rex.

Fascinating- that's one of the best looking Meteor machines I've seen. BTW- the company lasted into the 1980's building custom auto bodies, particularly hearses. Some of the off-brand companies are still in business making cabinets, such as the Waddell Furniture Co. which made two unusual models in the early 20's. I've got a crude portable made by Bradley, a hardware and packing case maker in Brattleboro Vt. They're still around as a maker of custom paints.

Im a off brand buyer,that is one cool phonograph.some of my best sounding players have been off brands.

I happen to be in agreement with you. I like all phonos but some of the off brands are really unusual and have strange features. I just bought a Starr upright, Big machine, made by the starr Piano Co. Great sound and a quirky automatic stop mechanism, along with a dial volumn control. The off brands sometimes were housed in unusual cabinets, and these I like best of all. Ed
