Only two tunes I really despise, "Mairzy Doats and Dozy Doats" and "The Hut Sut Song".
I used to collect Master Joe Petersen (The boy Singer) till I found out he was a 36 year old woman! No objections to that, other than a feeling of being cheated for years!

Barry,
That truly was a scam. I found out some 20 years ago, when famous producer Chris Ellis told me that story.

Oh I don't know. I quite like some Gigli recordings. He does overdo it on some songs but this one I think he nails it dead on and i've never heard another singer sing it as well as this.syncopeter wrote:Gigli, I hate that Neapolitan frog in his voice.....

Any man who denies Gigli should have all his opera records taken away from him.

I rather like it too. Interestingly I had just played Carouso's recording of it not more than 10 minutes before finding your link and to my ear it doesn't suffer all that much in comparison.Swing Band Heaven wrote:Oh I don't know. Despise is a strong word, but here I have a wonderful recording with one of the worst vocals I have ever heard. This guy really spoils this record for me. The singer isn't credited on the label and Rust doesn't mention him either. He sounds a bit like a really angry Arthur Fields.
I Don't Want The World, by Jack Denny and His Orchestra, issued on Brunswick 3124-B, recorded March 2, 1926.
Enjoy!

My tastes adapt to all musical forms (except this modern rubbish) so i keep almost every 78 and cylinder i get, so i dont have any records i despise! But some things that i see people hate i really like so i do get surprised looking over this topic!

When you consider the "music" that is out there today, Alex has point worth considering.

Re: Records/Artists You Absolutely Despise
It does sound like Fields, but the vocal is ruined by the gross overload distortion. The recording sounded like Brunswick had already replaced the Light-Ray's pallophotophone pickup with a proper condenser mike but still hadn't got a good control of gain within amplifier stages (or perhaps had an inadequate power amp to drive the cutter head). Their monitoring must have been much worse than that the Victor and Columbia engineers had, given the hit-or-miss quality of so many Brunswick electrics.bart1927 wrote:Despise is a strong word, but here I have a wonderful recording with one of the worst vocals I have ever heard.
