I share his frustration when collectors attempt to demonstrate these machines working and to my ears they appear to be quite poor in relation to contemporary disc machines. I would be interested in the opinions of others here though!I certainly am NOT - I've spent tens of thousands of Pounds on Phonographs and NEVER Found one that worked as well as a Gramophone - it's either the machine that won't revolve at a constant speed or the Cylinders are distorted

I would beg to differ with the poster who's spent thousands of pounds on phonographs and never found one that worked as well as a Gramophone, in fact I'd say pretty much the opposite if the comparisons are of contemporary machines. If you are comparing a 1910 Edison Gem to a 1930's Expert, that is a different story. I've got a Victor V next to an E model Triumph in the same room and even with the later Victrola no. 4 reproducer on the Vic V, (properly rebuilt) the sound quality of acoustic cylinders is better imho.

youTube is not a very good medium to demonstrate sound quality but the below may give you at least an indication.
