Crank for German Machine needed.

Post by Phono48 »

I have just bought an Electrola portable gramophone, which has a clockwork/electric motor manufactured by "Dual". The crank was missing when I bought the machine, and I'd like to get a replacement. These machines were not marketed here in England, but were common in Germany. I can't find any collector's forums based in Germany on the internet, so if anyone knows where I might possibly source one of these, or could tell me of a possible supplier in Germany, I would be extremely grateful.

There was a nice one of these at the Wayne show in New Jersey the weekend before last for a pretty good price. I considered buying it because I found the dual motor interesting, and the fact that it used a standard cloth appliance cord (no shortage of those around my house!). I wonder if an HMV or Victor portable crank might work?

This is a very active German Gramophone and 78s forum. Someone there should be able to point you in the right direction. http://grammophon-platten.de
Good luck.

For those of you familiar with the stereo equipment of the 1960s and onward, you know about the "Dual" brand of turntables and other components which were among the best and most popular of that era. This is the same company - the name evidently deriving from its earliest products which feature the combination of spring and electric motor in one powertrain, hence the corporate name. I had always wondered where the name came from and it seems there was a very legitimate reason for it. The company originated as Gebruder Steidinger in St. Georgen, Schwarzwald, Germany (plus a few umlauts here and there which aren't handy on my keyboard). The company marketed products under the Dual brand for decades, starting with these dual motor products. Attached are some pictures of an early Dual spring/electric motor.

Thanks, Andreas, I'll give them a go, and let you know how I get on.

The motor pictured above is the same as the one in my machine, and that's the crank I need

Barry.
