Victor VV-50 prices

Post by briankeith »

I have always been curious about this: Every week when checking whats hot and whats not on EBay or my local Craig's list, I find sometimes upwards of 6 or more Victor VV-50 portables listed in various conditions,,,, some rough some mint. My question is since there are so many always available for sale, why do they command such high asking prices? I purchased my VV-50 about ten years ago at a local flea market for $65.00 in near perfect condition. Just tossing this out, that's all. An estimated total of 152,600 Victrola 50's were produced.

I wondered this too. Look for the Dog doesn't value them very high. I really want one but just want to make sure I buy wisely.

The VV-50 is a beautiful machine with a pretty good volume. Especially those in quarter sawn oak are very sought after and usually command higher prices than mahogany. One of the reasons may be that they are attractive when displayed, but also can be stored away more easily than a regular table top machine. That's true for all portables, but the VV-50 displays much nicer with it's wooden case, compared to the unattractive suitcase styles. Back in the day companies even made stands to display and use it in the house http://www.oldcrank.com/articles/unico50/index.html.

I agree yet still find it hard to swallow the prices on these VV-50's since most of them have survived, plus are ALWAYS for sale on EBay. Actually there are seven VV-50's currently for sale on EBay as we speak........ Nine last month.

I must admit that I paid too much for my little VV-50, years ago when I was a just a lad but I don't regret the $200. It is a beautiful machine sitting in my living room. Yes, it is LOUD. People are really taken aback when they hear such volume coming from this little machine. If you close your eyes, you'd swear Tita Ruffo was standing in front of you. However, speaking of prices...

No kidding. As you probably notice, this is for sale in Canada. So the current rate of exchange would bring it up to $5,304 USD
Save your pennies and book a flight: this 'deal' won't last long

I can think of many things I could buy at the Harley shop for my bikes with $5000.00.

I don't think any of them are selling at the high end of the price range. I suspect someone listed it high and everyone who had one in the attic thought "If they're worth that much I'll sell mine." I've had 4 of them, and have never paid more than $100 (oak and mahogany).

I paid only $12 for my Victor VV-50. Okay, so it was 40+ years ago!
