I have just bought an HMV triple spring motor to replace the very noisy 2 spring motor in my HMV upright. Physically, it fits the same, so no problems there, but someone has obviously had a go at repairing one of the springs, and failed!
This is the motor with the sloping governors.I've never dealt with a triple spring motor before, and am somewhat confused. Each drum has a removable hub in the centre, and the front two drums have projections at the "back" (looking from the crank entry) which engage with the hub of the spring behind it. It would seem logical that all three springs would be wound into the drums in the same direction,i.e. anti-clockwise. When I took the lids off the drums, the one with the cog attached had the spring wound in anti-clockwise and looked untouched and original, but the other two had the removable hubs upside down, but one had the spring wound in anti-clockwise so the spring could not grip the hub, and the other had the remains of a spring wound clockwise! Can someone please tell me if I am right in assuming they should all be wound in anti-clockwise?
