Triumph O reproducer 2min problem

Post by phonogal »

I just got a Triumph D2 phonograph with cygnet horn this last weekend (something I've wanted for awhile). It has a model O reproducer which plays 4 minute cylinders nicely. When playing a 2 minute cylinder, the needle wants to skip. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Jan.

I have no experience with O reproducers but is the stylus in good condition?, does the weight move freely with out obstruction?

The 2 min stylus is in good condition. It seems almost like the carriage arm is moving slower than the needle in the cylinder groove. I don't know how this could be, if the carriage arm moves with the feed screw. It will play about 2 grooves then skip back and play them again. I have changed the lever to play 2 min and it is playing at the correct speed. This is my first Triumph and O producer so it might be that I'm not doing something right.

Hmm, strange, I've never encountered this before, have you tried the reproducer on another machine to see if it isn't just the feed screw?, the only thing I can think of now is some incorrect parts(wrong feed screw/gears/carriage) however, the only machine I own that is anything like a triumph is a home so I'm not too sure, I'm sure someone else can shed alot more light on the situation!

I think I know!, does the carriage seem to slip on the feed screw at all?, because I think you may have to adjust the half nut/half nut spring to make better contact with the feed screw?, is this the case?

Are you also changing the feedscrew speed as required to change from 2 to 4 minute operation? You need to do this in addition to changing the stylus on the reproducer. On a Triumph, this usually involves shifting the collar on the feedscrew/mandrel pulley. The feedscrew must rotate at half the speed for 4 minute play than it does for 2 minute play. Shifting the collar toward the belt shifts the gearing for 2 minute - away from the belt shifts to 4 minute.

Yeah, That seems more likely!

It works fine for 4 min cylinders so I don't think it's slipping on the feed screw. Maybe someone who has a Triumph with an O reproducer knows what it is. I'm probably not doing something right. I appreciate your help. Thanks, Jan.

It's probably what gregbogantz said, that your not switching it into 2 minute mode when playing 2 minute records

Is this not the knurded knob with the pointer by the brake lever? Or is there something else that I need to change? Jan
