My HMV 130 in action!

Post by bart1927 »

You may remember from previous posts that I bought an HMV 130. It was in less than perfect shape, so I spent quite some time cleaning and fixing it. I even obtained some original grille cloth to replace the missing cloth. Unfortunately the cloth was from a different HMV machine, with a different grille. Because the cloth has been exposed to light, dirt, and lots of cigarette smoke during the past 80 years there is some discolouration, and it is still visible where the old grille has been.

I also bought a digital camera yesterday, something I had been planning for quite some time. It also has the option to make little movies. I'm still experimenting with it, so the results are not perfect yet. The first movie I shot was of my HMV 130 playing "Polly", by Zez Confrey and His Orchestra.

If you click the HQ button, you can watch it in higher quality. If time permits I will make some more videos and photographs.

Hey Bart, great video and the machine looks really good. Its good to see that you have a soundbox with no buzzes or rattles - it shows just how good one of these machines can sound. Be sure to post some more videos of your machine / s. I also hope that you are able to find some grill cloth without the marks - but I still think you've done a great job there.

What a great little machine. I think they're really handsome. In the Elgar on Record book you can read the correspondence between Elgar and HMV when Sir Edward wanted to give one of these to his sister as a gift.

I've seen these appear for sale every now and then but never seen one in action. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice and thanks for posting the video.

I've been admiring those 130's for a while now and always have one in mind in case I feel a need for a solid, reasonably priced machine.

I own one worse for wear suitcase portable and sold off the couple of larger Victors I used to own, I'm not a phono collector, but sometimes I would like to have the ability to listen to records on a good little machine like the 130.

Bart,

That machine looks very good, and based on your video, it sounds quite good as well, especially for a table-top machine. While the grille cloth shows discoloration, at least you have the correct grille cloth until something better comes along.

Your video is quite watchable, and does a good job of letting us see the machine. If the YouTube bug™ bites you like it bit John, you might be interested in checking out the thread on how I assemble videos for YouTube; you might find something there that is helpful to you (and I still owe that thread some screen captures—and better yet, a video of one being made, although we haven’t made any new videos since I posted that).

If I can assist you with anything or answer a question for you, please do not hesitate to ask.

I’m sure we have members who share your tastes in music and who might be interested in getting to listen to it on YouTube.

Something that I have found useful—if you have an account on YouTube and stay signed into it, you can set your playback quality setting to ‘I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it's available.’ to automatically play the high quality version.

I also like that they added a HQ button to the embedded player; that’s a nice feature.

I have an HMV 145 which is basically the floor model version of the 130, picked it up on ebay for around $150. It's a great machine and packs a nice little punch considering the small non-ortho horn. Acoustics really come to life on it!

Nice video, Bart!

I've seen that HMV 130s come up fairly regularly on ebay.co.uk.
One of these days I'll buy one, I've only heard good things about them.

Yours look & sound great, congratulations!
