Rare DD record on EBay but not so great condition

Post by briankeith »

Pretty cool and pretty rare DD record currently on EBay. (251181727424) I know because I have one of these records in mint condition compared to the one here listed on EBay but my record does not have the big "red star".... Pretty rare even in this condition.

Up for consideration is a very hard to find Edison Diamond Disc. Here are details on this record's history as found in Copeland and Sherman's Collector's Guide To Edison Records.

"The management of Thomas A. Edison Inc. sent this record of holiday greetings to it's jobbers and dealers in late 1924. All the top brass, including the "Old Man" himself, said a few words of encouragement to their representatives in the field. Like "Let Us Not Forget" from several years earlier, a custom sleeve accompanied the record. A note the red star designation indicating a non-returnable, special order record."

Only 400 of these discs were pressed and sent out in November, 1924. The voices of the top personnel in the company including Charles and Thomas Edison can be heard wishing those who received the disc happy holidays and encouragement for the following year to come.

I would agree this is a rare record, but if I were to personally invest in one I'd try to get the original sleeve.

Even more rare is the booklet that was delivered along with record to the dealers.

I believe I have posted these before but will include the link again, following, if you have an interest:

Interesting booklet! Thanks for sharing the pictures. I haven't ever seen or heard of it before. Are you sure it was issued with the "Greetings" Diamond Disc. The booklet was made in 1920 and the Disc was pressed and sent out 4 years later.

Reproduction sleeves are available for this DD. But I agree, the original would be nice to have with it.

Great observation. I had not considered the date differences. You are correct. The record was recorded on 25 Nov 1924 for Year End release to the dealers. I had assumed the booklet went with it. I must be incorrect in my assumption, so there was some other intent behind the 1920 release of the booklet.

Yes, the Rolfs have some very nice reproductions of the sleeves. One must be careful when they think they are buying an original sleeve. The inside of the sleeve (white copy paper)is the easiest way to spot the reproduction.

Does anyone on the list have any information regarding the 1920 date of the booklet?

The seller posted a video of it playing with Edison. Pretty interesting stuff.

For such a rare record, I've seen a number of them over the years. I finally snagged a sleeper on eBay tonight, #140884510654 for less money than the last one and apparently better condition. It also has the red star. Not mint, and no sleeve, but I'm not complaining. :D Until your post, I did not know there were label variations. Pretty odd for such a small batch of records. At least, I don't recall ever seeing any without the red star.

I would like to buy one of those sleeves, but I don't know "the Rolfs" that you refer to. Can you give me more to go on? Thanks.

I didn't know Robin and Joan Rolf, (sorry I don't have thier contact information) sold repro jackets for this one. I've purchased one of thier repro jackets for "Let Us Not Forget" though. I thought they were pretty decent repros.
