So I am curious to what all of you think is the going "price" for a typical Edison Standard machine with no horn. Just a normal everyday machine in decent condition, nothing special about it that would increase its value. I know condition, original parts and such play a part in the price. According to "The Compleat Talking Machine, by Eric L. Reiss" that book puts most Standard Models in the price range of $650 - $700. How do you feel about that price in todays phonograph market?
Recently I've seen a few on ebay sell for around $400 and some change. But I'm a little skeptical about buying a machine that you cant really see the condition of in person. They always look better in photo's then they actually are in my opinion. I've also seen a few that need repair, missing a couple parts and reproducers and cranks for around $200-300. Is it typically better to buy a working machine with all its parts in good condition or can a person actually get a better deal buying a parts machine and trying to fix it up? I do know the price can really add up once you spend $50 on a crank and $100-200 on a reproducer.
Just thought I would get everyones thoughts and ideas on this topic, thanks!

You can probably get an Edison Standard for less than $500 or $600. Just search for a collector who has one for sale. You will be able to ask more specific questions. In my opinion, somewhere between $300 and $400 is more reasonable.

Re: Phonograph Prices?
Prices for the more common machines have softened a bit in recent years. But phonographs in original condition aren't always easy to find -- depending on where you live of course. Many of the Edison cylinder machines I've seen in the past few years have been refinished and have replacement decals. No thanks. I'd rather spend a bit more money for an all original machine.

300 to 400 seems right for a nice original with no horn and a Model C or H reproducer. Take your time and you will find a nice one!

I agree. Without a horn and in average condition, $300 is probably a good estimate. But like Andersun said, take your time. With some patience and plenty of searching you can probably find a nice Standard complete with the horn less than the prices quoted so far.Andersun wrote:300 to 400 seems right for a nice original with no horn and a Model C or H reproducer.
