Where can I find out some information on the repeaters sometimes found on Edison cylinder phonos?
I just got one and it is missing the worm gear, but I don't know much about these.

You're probably talking about a Model D repeater, but posting a photo would remove all doubt. If it's a Model D, I can post a catalog page describing it, as well as photos of mine.

Here are links to the videos for the two volume series, "How Does That Phonograph Repeater Work?" that I wrote for The Antique Sound Box, (now called The Antique Phonograph.)

These show the Gilbert, J, Weber, and D repeaters in action. The articles themselves give a little background on the repeaters and describe their action in detail.
Hope this helps.

If I did this correctly, you can see what I have. It might take some imagination what with all the dirt. Sort of like the imagination required to see your baby on an ultrasound. If you know what you are looking for, you can see it.
The missing worm gear and pinion mount on the bracket right in front of the lead screw. I would love to put this thing back in working order.

Re: Repeaters on Edison phonos
Dave,
You have a Model D repeater.
It appears that someone broke off the left and right ends of your casting - the parts that hold the return screw. You'll need the entire return assembly. But the good news is you have the special geared pulley and the reset arm. The return assemblies show up with some regularity. Keep looking on eBay and if you attend phonograph shows, you might find one of these on a table. Good luck!

Thanks for clearing this up for me. I at least now know what I am looking for! With any luck, I can find one at Union. I have some friends who go to the shows out East, too. Maybe I can talk them into looking for one for me. Do you have any specific dealers in mind that I might email to check for this before the show season?
I am hoping to start cleaning this up over the weekend.

You never know who's going to have a particular part, so contacting dealers beforehand is sort of a crapshoot. You could post an ad in the "Yankee Trader" section of this forum, and if you're a member of MAPS, you can post a free ad in In The Groove. Let other phono collectors know that you're looking for the return assembly of a Model D Repeater. You'll find one - and probably before Union!
Good luck - -

Dave,
Make sure you keep those mounting screws that are attached to the upper bed plate! They most likely will not come with the repeater housing. The left one is humped while the right is flat headed as to not interfere with the mechanisms movement during record play.

Re: Repeaters on Edison phonos
That's a great tip, but since I am in the habit of keeping everything, it would not have been an issue!
I really appreciate all the knowledge I have gained here. I am optimistic that I will one day find the needed part. I can't wait for the weekend to see how this cleans up.
