Columbia Jewel? 35? or C-2?

Post by gramophoneshane »

I bought my first American Columbia a couple days ago, and am wondering if there's any way to tell a Jewel from a 35 from a C-2?
The machine is in terrible condition & needs quite a few parts, including a lid.

This is the wreck I bought for $20, which included a spare Thorens motor that I wanted for parts, as it's from an off-brand machine which is the same make & model as one I already have in my collection. I probably would have paid $20 for the Thorens motor, motor board, speed control & brake anyway, so in my eyes, the Columbia really cost me nothing.

From what I can see looking at images & advertising on the net, the "Jewel" has 3 needle cups at the rear, and the speed indicator has a triangular plate that extends under the turntable (as below), so I dont think mine is a Jewel. Then again, I dont know if changes in the machine co-incided with changes in the model designation, or if they overlapped?

The mark left on my cabinet seems to indicate that it had the same speed indicator as pictured below.

I've also come across a couple machines which have the speed/brake controls on the front right corner of the motor board, but unfortunately the owners/sellers often refer to these as Jewels as well, if they call them anything other than simply a Grafonola.

Also, I've come across a few machines that appear to have the same motor board layout as mine, but the decal states the machine is a "Type C-2".

At first I assumed the model with the speed control on the right was a C-2, but the couple examples I found, did not include "C-2" on the decal. It must have used a slightly different motor to allow the controls to be moved to the opposite side, so was this a very late production C-2 that no longer included the type number on the decal, or just a variation that occured somewhere over the production of the 3 models?

Also, I dont know if it's of an significance, but my tonearm had a brass base and arm, with a pot metal elbow, but I dont know if the same arm was used throughout production of all 3 models, or if at some stage a full pot metal arm was used.
It also appears that at least some C-2's included a serial number on the machine, but I have no idea where this was marked, or if a serial number was included on the earlier models.
So far, I haven't found a serial number on my machine, though I might not be looking in the right place

So I guess my final question is, before I start my search for parts, is there any way to be sure exactly what model my Grafonola is?
I dont want to buy a lid and then find it has the wrong decal :)

Except for the brass base, this is a carbon copy of my c-2, the machine that turned me into a Columbia fan. Look forward to seeing the finished product :)

I looked in the Columbia Phonograph Companion Volume II, but unfortunately it does not give a lot of information and the (poor) pictures don't exactly match your machine. None of the machines pictured seems to have the needle cup to the right of the turntable. Without the actual lid it will be difficult to narrow down the exact model you have. I have never found a serial number on any of my Columbias. The brass base and tonearm indicates an earlier model, later all was made from pot metal. The speed control also looks more like an earlier model. Just based on all that I would guess that it's more likely a Jewel or maybe a 35, not a C or C-2.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
