Not unsure of the file size, I have never had trouble with files large or small. Yes you use the add file button. Search for the file by using the browse button, highlight the chosen photo, and choose "open" Then click the add file button and wait. It may take a while. Then "submit" when done. Good luck.

I just sold my standard B and the descriptions above seem spot on. There was a small amount of "droop" when the gate was opened, but not much. My standard D and E had the mandrel bearing. I have not owned an A or C.

old-bloke,
I've had pretty good success with making my stuff about 720x1008 pixels. The main thing is to not make them too huge.

your machine has been through a lot of repair!, the bed plate has been repainted, the case I believe to be original but the outside has been completely stripped for refinishing but un finished, the base and the bottom trim is missing, the cut outs are for part of the catches to hold the lid to the machine, they are missing, the lid handle is missing, the wooden bed plate frame is either un original or a repro because it doesn't have the slots for the catches which should be on the lid!, look at some pictures of all original standard Bs and you should see hats wrong!

Yep, it's a model B. Actually, I think that's a reproduction case. It looks rather well made. I can't see the lid well enough to say if it's original.

I guess the question is whether you want to finish the replica case by making a reproduction baseboard and cutting out the areas for the lid clips or simply keep an eye out for a good empty "Tall style" case (if the serial number is after 343762, you'll want an "Edison" decal rather than a "Banner" decal.) They often come up on ebay.

Were it me (and short of cash), I might opt to finish it off in a stop-gap kind of way. I'd probably try to replicate (or get someone to replicate) the baseboard and then finish the case and lid (so that they match). But, I wouldn't bother with getting the lid clips or fitting them to the case. Most people don't display the lid anyway, so I'd just store it. The bad news is that it's not pristine and all-original, but the real good news is that it's a real workhorse machine that can be made not only to present well, but play well too.

Martin

The bedplate has been repainted. The lid is original, but all other wood is not. Once it is back together, and you like the way it plays/sounds, then great. Enjoy it!

How can you tell the base plate has been repainted?
I've cleaned it and applied an excellent synthetic wax to protect it....probably makes it a bit shiny
but I live right by the ocean(salt air blowing through my house 24/7) so anything metal in my house
needs protection.
I stripped the case back as the shellac was in very poor condition, there where no Decals and I saw this as
my opportunity to finally learn how to "French Polish".
The machine is complete except for the locking mechanism and the mechanism 'stay"....i just haven't finished putting it together!
cheers

You can tell the bedplate has been repainted because the restorer did not put on the corner decorations or the Edison logo on the front of the bedplate. I suggest you redo it witht he proper decals and get one for the case, too.

Is that case old or new? It looks like new wood on the outside, but the inside looks dark and the corner braces looks old. Also, if I recall correctly, the hinges on the originals only had two holes in them.
You could add the slots for the lid if you wanted to and use a Forstner bit to mortise out for the metal parts that fit over the slot.

It looks like your handle is a repro too, since I think the originals used a one piece wire.

You should have lots of fun with this project and be able to enjoy showing it off soon. A new mandrel can be found easy enough to replace yours. It has seen better days.

hi Dave
Thanks for the information.I wandered why there was no corner decorations and no logos.
The case I'm sure is old.....whether it's original well l'm not too concerned about that as it looks as it should apart from the locking mechanism which is no big deal to do the cut outs and install the rest of the locking bits.
The Shellac work that was on it was very poorly done so I decided to strip the case completely........now I can end up with the oak the way i want it.
This machine will sit next to my HMV Table Top player in my lounge room which is full of restored antique English Oak furniture.
Can't wait to hear it playing.
It is a little disappointing learning about this machines "originality" but for me just thinking about the "stories this machine could tell" is a 'buzz"......and to be able to put it all together and make it work.... that's even a bigger buzz.
i didn't pay very much for the machine and I've only had to replace a couple of parts but I can see that you could easily "over capitalise" on projects like this and spend more than what it's worth.
I'm sure there will be more questions I need answers for before this "B" sings again
Cheers
