While the market has softened considerably courtesy of the recession since it was written, "Look for the Dog" puts the value in the $1,000 to $1,700 range. It is the rarity that is important in this case.

1. Space will expand to accommodate an infinite number of possessions, regardless of their size.
2. Shortage of finance, however dire, will never prevent the acquisition of a desired object, however improbable its cost.

Thank you for looking that up, I guess it was a good deal.
The only book I have is The Compleat Talking Machine and it isn't listed.
I'd really struggle with selling this one though.

Because of the rarity I would be very reluctant to refinish this machine. I don't think it looks that bad. The outside should clean and polish up satisfactory. Even with the repair inside the lid I would think long before deciding to try and fix just this area or leave it as history of the machine.

At this point I'm not planning on restoring the cabinet. Just rebuild the reproducer, cleaning up the mechanics and try to learn as much as I can about it. If I decide that it's something I'll pass on to my children then I'll probably refinish it so it can make it to it's 200th anniversary.

The only thing I would do is get rid of those terrible looking Robertson head screws. At the very least, they're the wrong size head. I wouldn't be surprised if when the lid is closed they bind against each other.
