Rebuilt My First Victrola Phonograph Motor

And it runs smooth as silk. After 71 winds, it'll run at speed for over 11 minutes.

Thanks to a 'How To' YouTube video series by ChillDude2007, it was a piece of cake! (a messy piece of cake)

Got 6 more to go!

I have to say that ChillDude's video series probably saved me some $$ since without them I would have had to send the motor out. Even so I was quite nervous regarding spring removal and as this was my first time re-build I paid attention to his suggestion of the 'pillow case method' for removal of the inner spring. :)

Way to go, no stopping you now. What was the hardest part of the operation?

The toughest part was waiting a week for the new spring to get here. The old one had a screwed up rivet hole - it was torn pretty badly. Everything else went pretty much as described in the videos. There was a point where I thought I had lost the tiny ball bearings that belong in the keepers for the governor shaft, but a really strong magnet found them in the bottom of the cleaning bowl.

Now I'm regreasing the springs in my home Victrola. They 'chunk' so severely that it causes the record to skip. Should be finished with that in about an hour. I hope. This machine is a few years older and has 2 single spring barrels. Took a while to figure out how to get the 'covers' off the barrels. Just whopped 'em on the side of the barrel with my hand a few times and they popped right off. Whew!

That would be a real challenge.

At least my house Victrola no longer 'chunks'. I regreased the springs and greased some other stuff and it is smooth as silk. Only on the 2nd winding, but I have high expectations.

This is fun! CDB

I broke open the spring barrel on the motor of my Vic I last week. I was not yet brave enough to extract and regrease the spring. I sprayed engine degreaser in there and shut it back. Wound it a number of times, then opened it up and cleaned again with carb cleaner. A lot of grease and gunk came out. Before, it would only play thru ⅔ of one record. Now it plays thru one record and ⅔ of the next. Some day soon I will feel brave enough to actually do it right. Just not yet. I applaud you, your fortitude and apparent skill!

Pulling the springs out of the 2 single spring barrels and reinstalling them was a lot easier than the 2 spring barrel.

What kind of grease did you put in the spring barrel? I watched those You Tube videos and he was using some pink grease to lube the gears. I was hoping he would mention what he was using for that, if he did I missed it. Tnx
