Triumph Model "A"- Need some help

Post by outune »

About 30 years ago I bought my one and only Triumph- A beautiful banner front Model A, with a great decal and 98% gold striping. A really nice machine. It had been converted to 2/4 minute with the pull out pulley type mechanism (as opposed to the 2/4 add-on lever) The machine was so clean, I put it on a display shelf and.. then got married, had kids, job change and now retirement. So I'm finally getting around to working on my own machines for a change.

Took the Triumph apart earlier this week-- cleaned everything well, reassembled it and noticed that the mandrel assembly seems too long. The top works are mounted in the slip bracket as far to the right as possible. Even so, the belt comes out of the bedplate and has to angle a bit to the left in order to engage the top pulley-- ..and.. the tip of the mandrel bearing on the gate end is just barely protruding from the gate.. the mandrel nearly touches the gate. I'm in no way a Triumph expert-- Were all banner Model A's originally 2 minute only? When it was converted could it be that someone put the wrong conversion mandrel on it. Inside the belt pulley of the 2/4 pieces there is a stamped letter "C". I've included a few pics-- showing the conversion parts that are now OFF the machine-- and a blurry(sorry) pic of the top works with a Home mandrel installed-- The Home mandrel fit well and plays fine for 2 minute. Were Home and Triumph mandrels for 2 minute the same?? I'm sure I'll have more questions, but will quit now an d wait for some answers- Thanks!

All banner Model As were originally 2 minute only.

Looks like you have the wrong conversion kit installed - it's for a Model C Triumph (or Home). Yours should be marked "A".

That last one is a trick question. Home and Triumph 2 minute mandrels for the same model (A,B,C, etc.) are interchangeable. There were minor production variations over the years, but using mandrels from the same model letter shouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, the 2 minute mandrels aren't marked as to model - you'll need to carefully measure or try out the parts to see how they fit.

Thanks George-- You confirmed what I suspected-- Wrong conversion parts were put on way back when. The Home 2 min. mandrel I put on is off a Home "A" and fits/plays fine. Glad to know it is legit.- Thanks-- Will I see you in Charlotte next month???

I checked my spare parts bin and this is what I found in spare four minute mandrels. Am I correct?
TB1 = Triumph B?
HB1 = Home B?
HD = Home D?
I am happy to trade if it helps bring your machine back into good playing condition but I suspect you need a TB1. Is that correct? Jerry Blais
