'Stompin' at the Savoy'--Chick Webb and his orchestra (1934)

As far as I know, this is the first-ever recording of this classic. It's taken at a much faster tempo than Benny Goodman's 1935 hit record, a streamlined version based on this arrangement.

This was originally released on a Royal Blue Columbia record, 2926-D, and spelled STOMPING AT THE SAVOY, with the band identified as CHICK WEBB'S SAVOY ORCHESTRA, and only '(Sampson)' as the sole composer credit.

What I have is a 1936 ARC Vocalion reissue, pressed from the original Columbia matrix W.152740-2, recorded 18 May 1934.

I love it too. You don't always directly hear Chick but you never miss the feel he's laying down.

The label in the pic is one that was used between 1935 and 1937.

Another genuine classic recording. Chick Webb was a great drummer who's sadly been kind of forgotten today.

Your transfer sounds much better than the one I have on the "Swing Time" Columbia CD box, thanks for putting it up.

Overuse of CEDAR or No-Noise (can't remember which) sounds muffled and lifeless.
