Why I love 78s

Post by CptBob »

I've been collecting 78s and gramophones for little over six months. My idea was to get music I'd been listening to on CD transfers (mainly French Bal Musette) on the original shellac on an original machine. I hoped I'd be able to find new things I had'd heard before or wern't available on CD.

The reality in the past few weeks has been going through 600 records, bought on ebay, most of which were 1950s pop that I've absolutely no interest in. The added pressure was my promise (before I bought them) that the conservatory would be a habitable room again by the spring. It's been a dismal process, sorting through them, listing everything I didn't want in batches of around 100, for 99p and seling them for 99p.

But it's the odd find like this that makes it all worthwhile. http://youtu.be/QRDgdY5A4iI What gloriously jolly uplifting music. I've no idea if this is a rare record, or if it's really common place, but it just appealed to me for the music.

BTW - sorry about the off-topic "sound system". It is basic, but it works and is ideal for going through, for instance, a large bulk of 1950s records. I bought the record player in a car boot sale in South West France. My daughter gave me the amplifier years ago, thinking it would be ideal to play an electric violin with (it wasn't). It's connected with half a guitar lead and a piece of insulating tape.

Enjoyed the music! That version of "Breakaway" is hotter than the Victor version, played, I believe, by George Olsen's Orchestra. Thanks for posting!

What a great song! I'm going to have to keep my eye out for a copy.
