Edison "Home" - small gear replacement on Shaft #2 ?

I have two Edison Home "B" machines that have each "eaten" the small brass gear on "shaft # 2", if we're tracing power-flow from the mainspring to the mandrel.

Looks like the gears are available in Wyatt's catalog.

Any helpful tips for installation ? Other things to check-out before installing the new gear ?

I assume you are referring to the brass pinion gear that often splits. I have replaced a couple over the years. That is an easy repair and no particular trick. I assume the spring has wound completely down. The first time I installed one, the replacement brass pinion gear had no set screw, so it was press-fitted onto the shaft and it held tight. For that type of gear, degrease the shaft before installing. The last gear I installed was a looser fit and had a set screw and wasn't as hard to fit onto the shaft. Either kind works fine.

If the replacement has a set screw, then it'll be easy to install.

If it's press-fitted, you should first align the old gear to where it would mesh properly with its mate; scratch some marks on either side of the shaft as a guide. When installing the new gear,you should check how tight it is on the shaft: if it goes on without too much forcing, you'll probably have to sweat-solder it in place.

If it hardly goes on at all, then heat it up with a gas torch, until it expands enough to fit on the shaft. Move it into the proper position, and let it cool; if all goes well, it should shrink enough to grip the shaft securely.

Wow...

A couple years ago.. I literally got the deal of a lifetime.. I got a complete Mint Mahoghany 1906 Edison Home for $225. The machine literally looks Brand New, and the Original gold stenciling and Gold Banner Decal is superb. The machine was listed as "Broken" - and it was.. The #2 gear was blown...and the machine didn't work. The original fiberglass dampening under the bedplate had fallen in between the gears and jammed them at one time. Instead of replacing the just the gear, I took the motor apart and replaced it with a whole 2nd gear assembly that I got from a parts guy.. The machine runs like brand new machine. I'm still pinching myself today on the deal that I got.. At any rate.. Does anyone know what the Parts# for the small gear with the set screw is? I'm going to order like two of them. I still have the big gear and shaft with the broken small gear in two pieces. I might as well make some use out of it.

I don't have a part number, but I have always gotten the correct gear by asking for the 19 tooth Home pinion that always splits. Whoever you buy from will know what you want.
