Worn gear on Victor I

Post by welshfield »

Hello: I am new to this forum and may as well start out with a question.
I am working on a little Victor I and discovered that the brass gear that engages with the worm on the governor shaft is worn. The spring just unwinds and that gear spins without ever spinning the governor.
Would it make sense to machine up two eccentric bearings for the governor shaft to shift the centerline of the shaft closer to the worn teeth of the brass gear? It seems like a siimple solution short of purchasing a new gear--if I can even find one. The bearibgs are just steel rods that insert into the cast-iron main frame and are held by set screws. I guess I could shift the centerline by about 1/16-inch.
Any comments?

Just contact George Vollema [email protected] and I'm sure he can supply the parts you need. You may want to attach pics for him to see. You can also check our "tips & tech" section on our forum. Good luck :).

John,

There's a bit more to those bearings. At least one o fthe bearings has a tiny ball bearing down in the bottom to take the side thrust of the governor shaft. Without it, the end of the shaft will rub in the bottom of the hole and bring everything to stop.

Take the advice above get a gear from George Vollema. It won't be all that expensive and a Victor I is certainly worth it.

Well my goodness. Your mentioning of a tiny ball bearing inside at least one of the brass bearings is new to me and I assume is true for most if not all victor machines. It also goes a long way to explaining why I suddenly came across a tiny ball bearing of mysterious origin when I was working on the motor of a table top Victor X that I recently got. My I presume the ball bearing goes in the brass bearing on the side that the drive gear is pushing the governor towards when the turntable is spinning?
