UK 78s - question re Eddie Shaw's D.A.T.E.S.

Post by Orchorsol »

I find this an invaluable source of information which I frequently refer to, although I am told there are various errors.

For certain runs of some labels, Part 1 of D.A.T.E.S. says "see Part 3" but I can find no reference there. The example at hand is HMV I.R.231, a John McCormack 78 which I would guess was issued around 1945 (pressed in Eire, hence Part 3) but recorded mid 1935.

Sadly Eddie died before he could take his project further. I corresponded with him a number of times with information. I think I have the last issues/supplements of Parts 1, 2 and 3, namely
1 - second revised edition, plus one separate update
2 & 3 - (original editions)

Anyone know any different, or shed any light?

The McCormack Society's discography shows these recording dates:

She Moved Through the Fair: matrix OEA 9329-1, 25 June 1941
Bantry Bay: matrix OEA 9459-1, 26 August 1941

IR.231 is equivalent to DA.1813. That doesn't answer the question of pressing dates as such, but it narrows the range a bit.

Fantastic, thanks! I was quite wrong - it seemed to have a similar ambience etc to his wonderful record of Bantock's Song To The Seals.

Shaw says DA1807 to DA1829 wereissued in 1942.
