Edison C250 - Whatizit Question

Post by CDBPDX »

Just brought home an Edison C250 with copper coils. Has wires and one seems to go to the reproducer. What's that all about? Is that original to the machine?

Thanks! CDB

Any other elecrical devices / wires / plugs apparent on the machine ?

The coils/armature look similar to those from electric "Buzzer" type bells / gongs from 1900-1940 era...

Wonder if it was some sort of signal to indicate when the record had finished playing, or perhaps an electrical trip for the turn-table brake ?

OR, an electric trip to start the machine ?

How about a top-side picture of the bed-plate ?

Is it perhaps a Duncan automatic stop?

It's definitely a Duncan automatic stop. Here's a previous thread:

Thanks! When I put it back together, I'll see if it still works. The reproducer does not have the wire attachemnt 'hole', but the tube running the wire up the horn is present.

The Duncan stop won't function without the modified reproducer that acts as a switch. The stock metal hinge block is replaced with a non-conductive hinge block to electrically isolate the weight assembly from all other metal on the machine including the body of the reproducer. Originally, even the lower v-shaped portion of the limit loop was covered with rubber so that the reproducer could be raised without making the circuit (only the two straight sides of the loop were uninsulated). The rubber on the limit loop is frequently missing, so be sure to replace it in some way if it is when you restore it to functionality.

Also, you can easily remove the Duncan stop from the bedplate and install a "regular" mechanical stop without having to drill anything. The screws and mounting hole positions are identical.
