hmv 101 horn and /or gilbert tonearm needed for a project

Post by kirtley2012 »

this gramophone has been a project in the works for over a year now, it has been sitting around for many months awaiting completion, well now i really need to knuckle down and finish it!

it is basically going to be a smaller look-alike of the emg XB, but i need to put the internal conduit in, for this i need a hmv 101 horn and a Gilbert tonearm or any tonearm with a similar base opening to that of the gilbert, does anyone have one?, that will bring this gramophone a step closer to completion!
thanks
Alex

the parts of the horn and tonearm circled in red are the parts i will use, for plan 1, i may only use the gilbert tonearm whole depending how it fits!

I can't help - I mean, I have both, but in machines I love, not a scrap box!

seeing your request made me wonder how you would join the two together. It also made me wonder how emgcr makes his conduits and whether that would be a better way?

you would think someone might have these common parts spare. When folks strip down a 101 or 102 and sell the parts on eBay it often amazes me what they charge, so I guess that route is out?

cheers,
David.

hi david
they are braized together then covered in a layer of body filler wrapped in fabric to prevent the sound escaping through the thin tin conduit, this was done to my hmv 31 by ian maxted, the previous owner who kindly made it for it since it was missing the original, this works better than the original also!, if you have seen the video of ian using the hmv base, emg oversize horn and emg soundbox, it keeps up quite well to emg's!, graham uses a very complex method incorperating cast conduits which are then lathed down to size, involving alot of maths and sensible things ;), i just dont have the equipment or knowledge to do that yet!

I was wondering if you could make a conduit from PVC pipe? It's available in lots of different sizes and you can cut it to size. A couple of 90 degree angle pieces, the proper length of pipe and some plumber's putty or silicone to seal it all up and I think you'd have something. Wouldn't be expensive, either. I don't think it would have an impact on sound quality.

unfortunately it is not that simple, the conduit need to be expanding from the tonearm to the horn, as you will see on the hmv picture and on your emg, if it is a straight tube, it has a serious impact on the sound, it needs to be expanding from the tip of the tonearm to the mouth of the horn so the sound can travel, if it were as simple as using pvc pipe i would have done it already.
thanks anyways

Here's one half...

...it has a No.4 sound box with it too, so I doubt it'll go cheap. You could always re-sell the parts you don't need - with careful listing and luck, you might even make some money. Postage is a bit steep though.

Cheers,
David.

Or simply buy this:

Why just buy a tone-arm when you could have so much fun breaking up or setting fire to the cabinet from which it came AND rid the world of one of these brute ugly beasts in the process?!

I'll second that! I've had two Gilbert machines, both had flimsy plywood cabinets with motor boards that flexed whilst winding the motors. Apart from the Garrard fittings, they had nothing whatsoever to recommend them. Awful things!
