Can Someone Identify This Location?

Post by phonogfp »

A number of years ago I bought a stereoview from a seller in England. It shows what appears to be a Sunday school being entertained by an Edison Concert Phonograph. I've always wondered where the photo was taken; it looks like England or northwestern Europe. I'm hoping that someone can identify the town/city. I posted this a couple of weeks ago in the UK Machines section, and Salisbury was ruled out, but Coventry remains a possibility (unfortunately, the Luftwaffe saw to it that Coventry no longer looks as it did before 1940).

In any event, I'd be most appreciative if someone would solve the mystery of this image's location.

Thanks - -

George P.

Hey Alex - Leicester Cathedral certainly has the right lines! I'd better do some Googling now...

Cathedral at Leicester is much smaller than your photo.
Comparing the size of the people in both images alone sets that straight.
That's without noting that the person in the Leicester image is within a stones throw.
The folks in your image are much much farther from it.
That's a very large church.

James,

Wow - I'm impressed with the time, effort, and perception you contributed to the cause - thank you! Your demonstration is pretty convincing, despite the outward similarities between the two structures. I spent close to 2 hours online last night examining photos of Leicester, and I thought I had hit paydirt when I found a 1904 map of the city. There was St. Martin's Church (later named Leicester Cathedral), but where was the park/meadow/commons where the phonograph concert had been held? I was losing hope in Leicester, and your demonstration cinched it. Thanks again.

Can anyone else suggest a likely candidate?

It looks like that spire has a slight kink in it. Could it be Chesterfield before its horn really started to sag?

only joking

I have spend many a hour on my own pursuits and hoped you would see it prior to your 2 hour tour.

I love google. I did not understand CptBob's post, but a simple search enlightened me.

Clearly, mine was not a serious contribution - that simple search would have shown me Chesterfield is nothing like it.

Wait a second!... this photo could have been taken very close to me!, it bears resembelance to st georges church which is literaly a 20 minute walk from where i am sitting right now!, if it is, this photo could be taken close to the site where my school currently is which was built in 1962, i can see it from my school and it looks a similar distance away
