Oh you cruel people!

Seriously though, I've got to defend Gilbert gramophones. Many sound far more impressive than they have any right to. There's something in the combination of the diaphragm, the bugle tone arm, and the often highly resonant metal internal horn which gives them a loud, brash, but musical sound. They are not "tinny", as so many lesser gramophones from the period are.
