Parting out a complete Amberola III serial no. 304

Post by Valecnik »

I thought Brianu's thread "Peachland250 on eBAY" deserved a more explicit title. Link here. http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=12343

This guy is parting out a very nice, complete and functional Amberola III.
I contacted him via eBAY. Politely suggested it would be worth more as a unit rather than disassembled and urged him to re-list it that way. Told him I'd bid on the complete machine but wouldn't bid on any of the pieces. I also asked for his phone number and provided him with mine.

he replied, "How much will you pay for all the parts?" No phone number provided.

Traded a few more mails, asked twice more if I couldn't speak to him by phone.

He replied he'd decided to piece it out.

As far as I can tell it's complete except for the speed control, auto stop and the knurled nut that holds the reproducer in place...

Really a shame.

This sort of thing has to stop. I see it on ebay all the time. And he's not THAT isolated...it's the Okanagan Valley which is actually kind of trendy...wineries fruit orchards and such...close to Kelowna and and a couple of humdred miles from Vancouver. You want to say..." And you've never heard of UPS??"

According to Google Maps about a 5 hour drive from the center of Seattle. Hardly the edge of the world...

a lot of people have sent him emails. if by persuasive, you mean an email credibly offering him a substantial sum of money to buy the whole thing and tend to all packing and shipping arrangements, then good luck. otherwise, reasoning with someone luck this (based on my own interaction with him) tends to involve very wishful thinking.

Also, it's pretty clear that once the lid, hardware, works, etcetera is all sold off, the cabinet goes to the fireplace because it's too big...

I know, and once they've decided to part out a machine they'll use anything to justify the decision virtually to the extent of " Thomas Edison and Peter Weber came to me in a dream and commanded me to get the screwdriver...." It's sad. :(

This is indeed unfortunate.
But everyone please remember that the people
who do things such as this set up bad vibes
for themselves in the universe.
Sooner or later, those vibes catch up with them.

People are ultimately and individually responsible for their deeds, and what ever they
do in their lives sticks to them.

The universe works on a balanced system, as far
as what I can see of how it works. When people
do outlandish things such as parting out and
ruining perfectly good things like this, some
time, somewhere, in some way, the universe will
balance that. Some people are just plain
destructive by nature. You see it all the time if you look for it by name.

Destructive! That is the key word.

I would be willing to buy it and send him a note through the eBay system...I asked if he would be willing to hold it till I figured out a way to get it to the US...I will to hear back...although he may want a ransom for it that may be too unreasonable. Shame! It is a great machine. I don't need one more III but I rather hold it than have it chopped up.
