Hey everyone,
I know, I have not been on here in quite a long time, and I just wanted to say, Hi! Just thought I would let you know what I have been doing, and why I have been away. Well besides work, I am still collecting records, but I have moved away from the ones played on Victrola's and Edison machines, and more towards 78's, that I would not play on these machines. Mainly because I have discovered the type of music that I want to collect. Mainly Early, Blues, Jazz and Country, and away from a lot of the music that was popular when these machines were new. Don't get me wrong that music is good, but my tastes have changed. That's also why I sold a good bit of my collection. Also, a lot of those artists were white, and I am looking for the black artists. The white preforms I do have are, The Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and Vernon Delhart! Which are fine, but I am moving away, from Billy Murray, Ada Jones, and etc, and more towards, Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, and Fletcher Henderson. These are the styles of music that I really enjoy. Oh sure, I still have my collection of cylinders, and DD's, and my early 78's for my Victrola, but I am tired of that music. I am not giving them up, mind you. For a long time I never had a direction or style of music that I wanted to collect, until I discovered Joe Bussard. The King of 78 records. After watching several good Documentaries on him, especially "Desperate Man Blues" I discovered the types of music I had been looking for? Then I started to go looking for these records, and hitting pay dirt. I decided to sell off the 78's that I had just randomly collected, and narrowed the collection down, to just a few choice 78's Although I may have some more I may part with, a lot of Victor "batwing's" Which I will sell or trade depending depending on what the other person has to offer? It would have to be worth my while. No classical, or religious. Maybe some good "Gospel Music", but is has to be by a black performer.
I Have a few Paramount records, and a Black Swan, and would like to find more. Blues and Jazz. However, I do not want any 78's from the 40's and 50's, that's not my style. Good music, but I can still find it on CD or MP3. I know I can find some of the early records online, but it's not the same. Mostly what I want is from the 1920's and early 30's. Before 1935.
I was excited when I found a Blind Wille Johnson. Not so much with the Blind Lemon Jefferson, but I still bought him, on black label Paramount.
Robert Johnson is really hard to find outside of ebay. My ultimate goal and find would be a 'Black Patti", but since so few were made in a span of seven months in 1927. They are almost non existent! Oh well!
Anyway, see you around.
Paul

Re: Just wanted to stop by and say "Hi!"
i have always wondered if reverend gary davis recorded on any 78s, did he??
i really like him and his down to earth style, often on a gibson J-200.
I love that guitar so much i am acctually going to save for a j-200, they are expensive, but a used or damaged one should be within my grasp given time!

Well according to Wikipedia. He has no recordings on 78's. Mainly Lp's and or CD's. Starting in 1954. Most of his songs were published after his death in 1972.
