Wayne MME phono show pics 4-19-09

Hey Guys -

Went to the Wayne, NJ MME phono show today. Looked to be another success, lot's of people and beautiful weather. The only thing I bought was an Edison Standard 2/4 minute gear cover for $50. I think that's a better price than eBay so I'm happy. I saw OrthoSean, Estott and Aaron walking around. Well, enjoy the pics.

Wow Dean, thanks for posting those....looks like there are some great machines there again this year. Just makes me very envious we don't have that wealth of machines at shows here in the UK. You just don't know how lucky you are!

Okay, this one puzzles me ---



I have a nearly identical model, which dates from the mid to late 1930s -- using the same chrome plated motor-board with all the same components--double needle cups for used and new needles, folding crank, speed control, brake lever, case latches, etc., -- but it's equipped with a standard Swiss-made "skinny, tapered" tonearm, and a generic style Swiss made sound box---all original. (These components made their way to a variety of off-brand deluxe portables, it seems, but they all seem to share one thing in common--no brand name is affixed to the case.)

Here's what the one I have looks like:





Now, the one at the show, though nearly identical, is equipped with a Victor/RCA Orthophonic sound box--there's no mistaking that mask !!! --and what looks to be a fatter style Orthophonic tone arm.

I'm curious as to whether this portable has been retrofitted with Orthophonic parts, or if it's all original and was offered by RCA/Victor as a more deluxe alternative to their early/mid 1930s models. Did anyone spot the RCA Victor logo anywhere on the inside of the case?

The show was very nice, though I believe attendance was lower as I found it easier to navigate around the various tables. I met OrthoSean, Edisonfan, Aaron, and Estott. I did see a few other name tags across aisles but never met up. The person taking money at the door said that there were a lot of folks wearing the name tags.

I didn't find anything I had on my list, but had a great time just the same.

Don Gfell had a homemade Barrel cylinder cabinet that has me inspired. Might be a good winter project.

This was a good day for my first show. It was cool to meet Bill, Sean and Brad. I left at 11:30, so I did not see anyone else? I did buy a nice Amberola 30 cylinder phonograph. So now I have three nice examples of Edison machines. It even came with 10 cylinders that I got to choose. I'll have to get a photo of it up soon. It's in really great condition, and plays beautifully. I also picked up a copy of Nipper collectibles, and met Joan & Robin Rolf, and they even signed the book too. I also bought one Edison DD Under the Double Eagle March & Under the Star of the Guard March. Plus a Victor Record 18757-A Scandinavia, B Ain't we got Fun. Even my mother bought a few things and enjoyed the show too, as well as my father. It was a nice weekend getaway, for the three of us.

I do remember looking at it and I'm pretty sure there were no logos. ...but as to the parts/modifacations, that I do not know.

I am glad i went again, the show is always awsome! This year i walked home with a hand wind Edison shaver, a Columbia model A Graphophone, a model B reproducer to play brown wax with, and about 12 or 13 brown wax cylinders all in VERY GOOD +++ condition... I got the cylinders and the "A" from my buddy Charley... the Shaver from a guy in an army outfit (who i have never seen before) (thanks for selling to me though!) and the "B" from a man whos name escapes me at the moment...

I enjoyed it a lot!!!!

P.S. for those of you that where there and witnessed the get tragity that occured be sure to say a prayer for Ken (or is it Kent? again i am not good with names and i have never dealt with him before...)

Great to see everyone again and see some new faces!

Aaron, it was Ken Woodbury that had the heart attack, I certainly hope he will recover, if anyone hears anything, please keep us posted.

The show was great as usual. I came home with a few hundred records and my Wadell Music Table (which is really cool!) As Brad pointed out, attendance was low this time and it was easier to get around, which was nice. I didn't notice many machines moving at all.

We did get a small group photo outside with a few people we could find, it will get posted my the member who took it in a few days, I'm sure.

A great time, all in all, but I'm beat at this point!

Thanks again for posting photos for the people who didn’t attend. I’m glad to hear that it sounds like everyone had a good time, and quite a few members were able to meet up with the name tags.

Did anyone come home with any good finds?

This brings up a sensitive, but important subject. As we were entering the show at about 9AM, there were many police cars and an ambulance at the side door of the Wayne PAL building. We were told that the kind & gracious gentleman from Nipper's Choice, Ken Woodbury, had a heart attack and was being taken to an area hospital. Witnesses said it appeared serious.

I mention this because we are in a small hobby and Ken is one of our best representatives. I hope that all of you will keep him in your prayers. Hopefully, we will hear some good news in the next day or so.
