Mystery Victrola VV 230

I have two Victrola VV230s and one has a mystery concerning its tag. The tag is brass and is a rectangle with no model or serial number on it. The Victor information is engraved on it as normal but it lacks the lower part with the model and serial numbers. The tag appears original and there are no other tack holes and the tag has not been removed or replaced according to the dust and such. The tag does not appear to have been cut and, as such, the machine has no model or serial number but the cabinet is like the other 230 that I have which has both numbers. Has anyone ever run into this before? The machine is not in good shape; veneer missing on two doors and the one piece lid had the center broken out of its trim sides.

Is there an inspection tag tacked to the motorboard, underneath the turntable ?

Any trace of the paper cabinet label on the bottom of the machine, with date in the lower-left corner ?

No paper tag under or in the cabinet as far as I can tell; there does not seem to be any evidence that there was ever one. I'll pull it out in a few days and look under the turntable and under the motor board to see if I find anything. Curious situation to me...

I believe that this tag has been cut. If you look closely you can see two pin holes above the tag where a taller tag was once attached. The two bottom pins are somewhat covering the area where the cut was made. I made a before and after picture of a similar tag to show what I think was done. If you rounded the corners and scraped the paint from the area at the bottom, you would end up with what you see in your cabinet. You should be able to remove the tag and see evidence of the cut.

Yes indeed. Just a cut tag. Maybe the machine was stolen back in the day??. No serial number.... . You can see where the stamp area ends circled in red. The bottom corners are also crude.
This all said....the died give away are the filled holes and the one nail missing. That means the tag was removed at some point.

Sure looks that way! Wonder what stories this machine could tell since someone obviously went through the trouble to cut the tag... Thanks, everyone!
