over the years i collected nearly every recording of sir harry
the first very rare disc (or discs)are on berliner (date unknown to me)recorded in glascow
the second are a couple of Pathé cylinders in 1904 in standard intermediate & concert size
another is atleast 1 single sided Pathé disc in 1906 recorded at the theater royal pantomime in glascow
from 1908 to 1913 harry recorded for edison in 1927 some cylinders where reissued (diamond discs of harry where recorded but never released by the edison co due to harry's victor contract some lauder titles where released by glenn ellison on edd and e ba)
from 1907 to 1927 harry recorded both for the gramophone co and victor earlyer discs (1903-05)for the gramophone & typewritter co are said to exist (but im not sure about these
since the european zonophone co was under the wing of the gramophone co many lauder records where produced on this label under reduced prices
twin and cinch records of lauder are also said to exist this is likly since both labels used zonophone stampers
in 1938 he made a radio show for the bbc
in the 1940s harry entertaint the troops both in britain and oversea's (rare acetate recordings are said to exist)
harry died in 1950 at the age of 79
there where several lauder imitators
peter dawson under the name of hector grand
glenn ellison
albert budler
donald mckechnie
donald maclean
jock macgregor
kenneth mckenzie
roderik macclaghlan
sandie macgreger (also known as sandy mcgregor on indestructible cyl)
sandy shaw
its been said that harry lauder used pseudonyms on brown wax cylinders of various small brittish companies but even dough its likly that harry made some early recordings no facts to these seem to exist
of the modern scotish comedians im a real big fan of billy connolly as with harry lauder i have nearly everything billy ever recorded and i can't wait to get more!

Re: Novice in need of advice.
well tino, it might interest you to know that sir harry lauder owned a edison amberola 1A, this machine was given to his daughter and then in turn sold at a estate sale, clearing out sir lauders estate, the machine was sold in it, this machine appeared on the antiques roadshow when they visited newcastle (where i live) the owner found it at the back of a antiques shop, it is, as far as i know, located very near me although i dont know where, i have not been able to track down the owner himself unfortunately!mrphonograph wrote:ahh!! harry lauder im a big fan (more like obsessed!)

Re: Novice in need of advice.
I remember my jaw dropping as I saw that Amberola on TV, complete with it's provenance from the auction sale of the late Sir Harry Lauder's effects.
As has already been mentioned, Peter Dawson imitated Harry Lauder on record as Hector Grant. These records were so successful that Dawson, heavily disguised and wearing a kilt, made a series of public appearances as Hector Grant.
Years later, Lauder and Dawson met at the HMV recording studio, where Fred Gaisberg revealed the true identity of Hector Grant. Lauder is said to have replied :
"Nah, nah, ye canna tell me that. I saw him in Glasgie. Yon was a much older man, and besides, I've come doon to mak' records an' no tae argue nonsense."

Re: Novice in need of advice.
Slightly off topic, here is a Harry Lauder musical jug from my wife's collection of musical boxes and novelties. It plays "I love a lassie". The "walking stick" handle is extremely vulnerable to damage, and this intact example is a rare survivor.

As well as the jug pictured, Crown Devon made several other Harry Lauder musical novelties in the late 1930's including a later jug with a conventional handle, a flagon, a pint tankard, a half pint mug and a cigarette box.
They play either "I love a lassie" or "Roaming in the gloaming", and as they have the song title and/or the words printed on them, make sure before you buy that the piece has the correct movement fitted.
I don't know whether many were exported, but good hunting!

The caption with the photo (on the liked website) says the phono is an HMV electric model. It appears to have a drop record changer which would be in keeping with some of the HMV models from the early 1930s. I have one of these changers which was called "the lump" when the Brit who sold it to me had to schlep it to the post office to send it to me. It's made out of steel boilerplate and weighs a ton.
