Berliner Horn

Does anyone know what the right horn goes on an early Berliner phonograph? I have seen all variations and don't know what is correct. Is there one specific one or could a buyer get several variations as an option upon purchase? Thanks!

Oh my goodness........I think I do . However, he has no interest in talking machine's. That may mean he is better off..... . I have a feeling I'm going to catch it from the members with that comment... .
Seriously though.....Berliner's in the US did at first did come "standard" with a black gold stripped "funnel" shaped horn (see bottom horn in my last post). However, by the late 1890's a black horn with bell was "standard". Which looks exactly like the black horn in the group photo I posted. There was an aftermarket all brass horn (made by H&S) for Berliners and even for Berliner coin-op machine's.
By the early 1900's there was a black and brass bell horn available. In Canada (1900-1903) four horns were offered. These horns are shown in the group photo I posted above. Price (in Canada) was $1.00-$4.50. The most expensive being the very rare steel nickel plated horn you see in the photo.
One can assume they are rare because few would have paid an extra $4.50 on a machine that sold for $15.00 just for the finish. Of course this only applied in Canada. In the US....the last official "trade mark" was the Victor B and the black and brass horn was available.

Very good, Wayne! But just to clarify - - U.S. Berliners were not originally offered with a black & brass horn. At least I've never seen them mentioned or illustrated in original documentation. As always, I'd be grateful to learn something new!

The earliest reference I'm aware of regarding black and brass horns on disc machines in in Eldridge Johnson's 1901 Victor catalog where they are offered as extras. The Type B was supplied with the "Standard Japanned Amplifying Horn" but black & brass horns in 3 sizes were offered on the final page of the catalog. Johnson's 1900 catalog does not mention black & brass horns at all.

Correct, a typo on my part. I meant in Canada. However, I think in the US the type B was available with a B&B horn....??. Of course there is also the pewter belled horn. Not sure I have ever seen one on a TM style model..??. However, I have seen them on A's & D's.
By the way, talking about TM's and Son's......This maybe why my Son has no interest in talking machines. Did we traumatize him at a young age by subjecting him to such torture..???. We may never know.... .
