Standard Model A spring barrel question

Post by Dave D »

I bought a Standard Model A at an estate sale. I took a chance since the crank was missing and there was no way to tell if it worked or not, but I figured I would make a crank and fix whatever the problem might be. I was surprised to find the crank in the case, but the whole spring barrel is missing.

I think a spring barrel and bull gear from Grafonola will work, won't it? I have attached two photos for anyone who is interested to inspect. If anyone has the parts I need and wishes to sell them, please let me know. I know Columbia used a lot of the same parts over the years and I hope these parts are easy to get.

Sincerely,
Dave D

Thanks for the reply, but this is a Standard Talking Machine Model A disc machine, not an Edison.

You may want to try George Vollema at Great Lakes Antique Phonograph. I have a Standard Model A which I bought without the crank (almost assured the motor does not work if the crank is missing). But in this case most of the motor is missing. At any rate I am sure George can fix you up. What condition is the horn and decal?

I do have a Standard A as well as a table top Grafonola... I can look at the motors and let you know if parts can be swapped if you wish.
the Standard's motor would benefit form a rebuild anyway so it'll be a kick in the butt to get started sooner.

I think I found most of what I need in my junk box. I have a lead on the last gear, too.
I don't know what they came from, so I can't say anything about compatability.

gears look smaller even if they are pretty similar.
