I think you are all missing the point.

The real definition of a "winner" of an auction (particularly an eBay auction) is a person who feels that the item is worth more money than does anyone else in the world who is participating in that auction.

Whether you snipe, proxy bid, or anything else, you are basically paying more than anyone else for the item. Some of you describe this as "winning." Others may not agree.

I understand that at a local farm auction, there may not be any participants who may recognize the value of a particular item. But that's definitely not the case for eBay. Just ask any dealer who is selling on eBay. You may notice that they keep selling, even after selling you that item at your perceived "great deal/steal."

An auction used to be a way to get a good deal, however Ebay is a deal where you get used.

After reading these comments, I'm throwing in my 2 cents worth. When I bid on ebay, I put in the absolute maximum that I am going to bid. That's it, no more. I've gotten some good deals in the past. Other times, I have lost the auction for as little as 50 cents. But that's OK. Eventually, I will get the item later, or from a collector or at a show. I'm not going to lose any sleep it I don't get the item right then and there.

I'm not even sure what this statement means.....First, there is nothing quite like Ebay and second, IF you follow Ebay rules and pay by Pay Pal.....YOU as the buyer have not only your money protected BUT you have pretty much ALL the power and control of the sale. So much so, that the seller is the one that stands a far greater risk of being "ripped off".
Last, is this thread supposed to be in our classified section???.
