I took apart an Amberola 30 motor with a ratchet pawl not working too well. I don't know what it's supposed to look like so I don't know exactly what's not working right. Anybody got a picture of the Amberola 30 ratchet mechanism? Seems there should be a spring or something to keep it in place....
Thanks! Cliff

Re: Amberola 30 Ratchet Pawl Question
Cliff,
I've posted some photos of an Amberola 30 pawl, one in-situ and two of a spare I have, damaged when the spring exploded.
Let me know if you would like more from other angles.
Regards,
Alistair.

Re: Amberola 30 Ratchet Pawl Question
I fashioned a spring that should keep the pawl in place. Hopefully, this won't happen again, but I won't know for sure until I get the new motor spring and put it all back together. CDB

Re: Amberola 30 Ratchet Pawl Question
Just brought home an Edison C-150 and took it apart, looked at the pawl on that and it seems a much simpler doohickey will work just fine, so I made another one. A photo is attached. You can also see it in action on YouTube at:

Hopefully, there will be no more scary incidents....

Re: Amberola 30 Ratchet Pawl Question
IT WORKS!!
Put in a new spring, cranked it up, and everything works like new! The spring is springing, the pawl is pawling, the sound box is sounding, and the mandrel goes round and round!
Call me Mr Happy!

I see your confusion now.Dhager wrote:Where did you get the mandrel spring? Mine is not working.......it's lost it's spring
This is not the "mandrel spring": it's the winding shaft spring. Once again, the suppliers in the Links section can furnish a replacement.
Normally, turning the crank backwards will remove it. If this spring is broken, that may be difficult; you'll have to find some way to immobilize the winding gear.
Incidentally, my Amberola 30 (a fairly early one) has a different arrangement: instead of a spring circling the shaft, it has a small coil tension spring hooked into the pawl at one end, and into a hole in the casting at the other. (I am not absolutely sure if this is original; however, there is no evidence of a spring around the shaft).
If this is your case, you might be able to modify a small tension spring from the hardware store - or even one from a retractable ballpoint pen - for this purpose.
