The brake and the speed regulator are usually seen on earlier cases. Can we have a photo from the catalogue page?

PS: The crank is also an early type.

I don't have a catalogue. These scans are from record sleeves and are made available courtesy of [Colonel Mustard]
Knowing considerably more than I do about recording artists of this period he puts the record and sleeve at 1908.

As for the winding handle, that is identical to the one in the scan and these existed well into the teens. I have a Style 1 from 1912 with identical handle. I also believe the continental HMV offices got what was given to them, including older parts. That is why the brake is the earlier type. This machine could have been available from 1905, presumably?

This is a very nice sleeve! The drawings are older than the record. I would guess they date from 1905, when the Morning Glory horn became the standard equipment. At a later date, one of the owners exchanged it for the beautiful green horn, which I haven't seen in any Gramophone Co. catalogue.

275 Pesetas was equivalent to US $55 or £11, making it an above medium range model.

I don't think this is true. Although the scan shows a Morning Glory horn of a pattern you and I are more than familiar with, the horn on Marcel's machine is absolutely original to it and correct. The Spanish HMV company got horns unique to their models (at least unique as far as I'm aware) and I believe they were made by Pathé or at least by the French company who made Pathé horns. They are the same gauge of metal and almost identical in shape and design. Remember also that it was the FRENCH division responsible for supplying the Spanish market and they might have sub-contracted out the production of "special horns". The colouring was a feature of these specific horns as well. HMV normally only gave red, black and green MG horns as an option. The Spanish market demanded far more decorative and elaborately painted horns. I have seen about half a dozen examples on the internet and they are all identical.

The Spanish machine I have has a cabinet that was probably made in Germany by the same company who made the Melba pedestals. Again, the horn on this machine is almost definitely French and is nearly identical to Marcel's. However, my machine being slightly later has "HMV" decals and the horn as an oval indentation in one of the petals with the dog and gramophone transfer within it.

Maybe, when these adverts were printed they were only expecting 'standard' horns on their models?

When a new spring motor was introduced in 1906 or 1907, the position of the crank was moved from left, as in this model, to right. The change also brought with it a new crank, but obviously not with every model as your Style 1 shows.

Did you buy this machine? http://www.ebay.de/itm/historisches-JUG ... 53f59af932

The horn is indeed similar to Marcel's. I wouldn't repaint it, as it looks spectacular the way it is now.

Hi

My girl and I will be in Barcelona early December, I will have to see if I can pickup some record covers or info on these machines. Does anyone know some collectors over there?

Marcel

Hi Marcel,

Oh I see now! :monkey: I read your comment "it came from Barcelona" as meaning it was bought from Barcelona in recent times. Yes, of course, it came from Barcelona originally but I wonder where Mario found it in more recent times, especially in that excellent state of preservation? In fact, what has happened to Mario? I haven't seen him on the forum or heard from him in years.

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve

Mario no longer collects, he still has some top end machines. He does buy and sell on occasion for profit. I bought a large percentage of his collection over the years. The Spanish HMV I believe he shipped it over from Bacelona, I don't know how he found it, maybe Ebay.

Mario just recently got married and is planiing to start a family, so I guess he has other priorities now.

Regards Marcel
