BO Graphophone help wanted

Post by zapper »

Hi I have read the 'parting out' comments recently posted. Mine is different. I bought a 'BO' at auction in 1986 for the horn and back bracket for my 'BQ', which I bought from a dealer in 1984. The 'BO' was in a 'bad' state, more of a basket case, but my collecting interest is with getting machines to working order. I am now looking for information on the BO from any forum members who are willing to help. So far I have had the parts re-nickeled, but they are not too good so these maybe re-done. The steel base-plate and reproducer arm have been stove enameled, but again the finish is not good. The cabinet is the major problem. 3 of the bottom mouldings are missing. The 4 side panels, with oval cut outs are missing. I have made some in oak from photos but would like someone to tell me the thickness of originals. I have also made the curved corners with solid oak but photos show a possible oak veneered softwood backed finish. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone with these wood parts would be good to find. I have no lid, but that is less important.I guess the suitable decals can be purchased from Greg Cline?
I would appreciate any help to get this machine back in working order so all your comments will be gratefully received. I have posted a photo showing the task ahead.
Regards

I have a BO in nice original condition. I had just assumed that the oval features were simply milled out of the board, but close examination reveals that they were made by overlaying a sheet with an oval cutout over the back board - the grain doesn't match exactly. Also as demonstrated in your photos which clearly show that your overlay is missing. The thickness of this overlay is only 3/32 inch - quite shallow. The cutout of the overlay is a simple straight edge at right angles to the outer surface. There is no angle, chamfer, or deliberate rounding of the outer edge other than a simple breaking of the sharp edge.

I assume you are asking about the rounded corners of the base of the case. These corners are not separate pieces. The front and back rails of the case bottom are solid oak and span the full length of the base with their corners rounded. All of the curvature is contained on the front and back rails. The short end rails of the base are square-ended and are simply butt-joined with the front and back rails. This construction is similar to the way the top rails of the case are made. The rounded corners of the body of the case are again made of solid oak parts and these are separate from the side boards. The case is glued together with no screws evident. The deckplate simply sits inside a cutout in the top of the case which is made by solid oak rails in a manner similar to how the base is made.

Hi Guys
Thanks for your replies. gregbogantz thank you for your comments. I will now need to check the pieces I made some years ago before fixing to the case. The corners on the case between these 4 panels looked to be solid, but looking at another photo I thought they were veneered on softwood. Perhaps you could check these and let me know. Since posting this I have started to inspect the mechanical parts and in particuler I need information on the 2-4 minute gears and lever adjuster. If you have this I would appreciate some comments where this fits. Any other comments would be greatly received. Regards

Hi Me Again
Just wondering if anyone has a BO with the 2-4minute attachment. It looks as though there are parts missing from mine. So please can someone help with close up photos or bits that will help me sort this out. Thanks
